Labeling Hotspots in a VRI want to show you what we can end up with at
the beginning of this discussion so you can better understand why I'm
even talking about this.
Look at the following image and note that there is a title at the top of the screen and in the light-colored bar at the bottom of the screen, just above the controls for the vr, there is a label. If you look closely at the image, you'll see that my mouse cursor has changed shape into an arrow because the computer detected a hotspot in this vr, next to the park bench. Why label?
When creating vr's think about the educational uses for your product. By labeling the vr hotspots you can provide your end-user with additional information. Adding the number of the hotspot to the label will speed up multimedia development because you won't have to look for them. These are minor issues, yet they are important ones if our focus is on the way these elements can enhance learning and not just on the cool things we can do with the technology. How do you label a hotspot? Remember that you have to have software that allows you to create a hotspot before you can label it. I'm going to talk about using VR Worx v2.0. It doesn't matter if you're Mac or PC. First, open up the production file from which you made your vr. Or, if you're just in the process of making your vr, you want to be at the point where you are on the Hot Spots tab as in this picture below. I've already created my hotspots by clicking and dragging a shape over an area. VR Worx labels them automatically with a number. Notice that in this next image, the same hotspot now has little handles around it. That means I've selected the hotspot by clicking on it once with my mouse button. Look at the top, left-hand corner of the image and you'll see my mouse about to click on the properties button. Once you have a hotspot selected, you can click on that button and do all sorts of interesting things. For this discussion, we're going to keep it simple. Here's our hotspot properties dialog box. Next to ID, it tells us that this is hotspot 001. Below that is where we can make alterations to the name. It will simply call it Hot Spot 1. I've included the number of the hotspot plus a description of the significance of this hotspot. That's all there is to it. Do this for each of your hotspots and you'll be adding value to the work you've already done. |
