eZedia QTI2 How-To Movies
eZedia QTI2 for Mac and Windows works pretty much the
same. The following instructional "movies" were created to assist
students with projects. I've included some very simple steps on the
basis that some of you may be working all on your own somewhere.
IMPORTANT POINT: All of
these movies can be saved to your own
computer so I can be there to help you when you need me. That
means you don't have to be online all the time if that is an issue for
you. You may NOT distribute these movies nor use them in any way
whereby you derive compensation of any sort. For use with larger
training programs, please contact me directly for permission.
2nd important point: I've
produced these movies as RealPlayer files. You'll need the RealPlayer
for Mac or Windows to view them. I'm not fond of RealPlayer but it does
save on download speed for those of you on dialup. When you install the
FREE RealPlayer, be
careful. Do a CUSTOM Install. During
installation, go in and UNCHECK all the other media types that
RealPlayer also wants to play for you. Stick with just those that begin
with the word REAL. It can be extremely annoying otherwise if you don't
because RealPlayer will try to handle files you don't want it touching.
If that happens, I've got a webpage up
that will show you how to get the computer to use particular programs
to open up the right files. That information is available here.
RealPlayer - Mac
- This should take you directly to the FREE PLAYER download.
RealPlayer - Windows
- MAKE SURE YOU CHOOSE THE FREE
PLAYER ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE PAGE.
Because I am creating these movies to supplement instruction, you will
find that they cover a variety of topics. There are a couple of movies
that take you through two different projects from start to finish.
There are others that touch on a specific skill or technique. You
should periodically hit the "refresh" or "reload" button on your
browser when you visit this page as you might not otherwise see the new
items as they are posted.
To save on download traffic, the web version of these movies have been
produced in Real Player format. It's not one of my favorites because of
its proprietary nature, but it does do a good job of providing lean
files. As some of you are on dial-up only, that is a serious
consideration.
Walking through a complete
project:
Level
1 Photo Album (additional print instructions are
at this site)
Level
2 Photo Album (this builds on what you learned in Level 1 - additional print
instructions are also available at this site)
Skills/Techniques
1. Beginning QTI2 - Closing
the Start Screen if you don't need any of those resources
2. How
to start a new project
3. How
to save a project
4. What's
in a QTI2 working folder after you save the project?
5. How
to generate a website from your QTI2 project
6. How
to export an interactive movie (QuickTime) from your QTI2 project
Positioning and Sizing
Shapes and Objects on the Frame
3. Making
multiple shapes and/or objects on the frame the same size with only
a couple of clicks
4. Using
the dimensions and positions information in the Attribute Panel to
make objects the same size and to place them in particular positions on
a frame
5. Using
the grid feature to line up objects
6. How
to automatically align and resize shapes and/or objects
Working with Graphics
7. Opening
a Media Library and bringing in graphics from the libraries
supplied with QTI2
8. Neat trick - bringing
in a graphic from the Attribute Panel - great when you've glued
things to the background and have forgotten where your original graphic
went
The "Oops!" Division
Occasionally, something goes awry when we build a project and we're
just not certain why. No matter what software program you use, about
90% of errors are usually the result of lack of attention to detail.
(Here speaks the voice of experience!) I'm going to try and recreate
some of the typical things that we do and show you how to fix them.
A. My Goto Objects don't show up
on my frames when I generate the website (this lesson applies equally
to buttons, too)
Usually, this occurs when we have:
- forgotten to tell it to appear on all frames
- neglected to give it anything to do by forgetting to make choices
under Actions on the Attribute Panel
I've
created a movie showing you what it looks like in the editor mode in
QTI2, what it generates as, and then how we fix our mistake.
- a variation of the one above is when we make a Goto Object or button
on the first page that is to take us into the project. From there, we
have put Next and Previous buttons. If we don't give that first button
on the first frame any actions, it won't take us to the second page!
Our other buttons are there, we've just locked the door to keep us from
getting to them.
