VR's from around the US and Canada

Go to main page of vr links at this site.

The following vr's have been created using VRToolWorx version 2.0. In some cases a Kaidan camera mount was used and in others, a $1.49 level. The files are fairly large. Most are around 400 kb to 3 MB. That means they will take a bit of time to download if you are on a modem. You're also going to need QuickTime to view them. That's a free download from Apple.com. If you don't know how to download and install QuickTime, I have instructions under the training materials link on the left.

Don't assume that if you have a new Windows-based computer that you have QuickTime. We've recently discovered that computer manufacturers are not consistently installing it - which is a bit of a pain for end-users. Common sense would say put it on the machine right from the start. QuickTime is free and it is indispensable. Get it. You'll need it on a regular basis. Windows Media Player does not handle vr's.

Wallace House, Florence, SC
Tobacco Field in Rural South Carolina - not far from Florence
This vr provides a 180 degree view of tobacco fields in the Pee Dee region of South Carolina.

  1. South Carolina has a wonderful park system that shows off the great number of historic sites in the state. This vr is from Hampton Plantation and shows the George Washington oak and the plantation home.

  2. Here's a view of the  rice fields that once flourished in the coastal areas of South Carolina. This vr also comes from Hampton Plantation.

  3. The view from under the oaks is rather interesting. Take a look!

Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation, Darien, Georgia

Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation, a former rice plantation and in later years, a dairy,  is located just outside Darien, Georgia. The following vr's are from there. They provide an informal tour of the plantation. We've also included a couple that are lessons showing that you should always double-check your camera lens before either every shoot or every couple of vr's. You may notice on one or two that there are odd blue clouds in the sky. The source of the phenomenon is something on the camera lens. These things can happen and demonstrate how important it is to check the camera lens before creating your vr's and then, even if you do that, check it after. The one disadvantage is that in very strong, bright sunlight, it might be difficult to see the tiniest of smudges at times.  These are all lessons for life. Enjoy the vr's - even those with blue clouds in a clear sky! Before I forget, the one I didn't post had the strangest black shape in the middle of the vr. That mystery was solved when I realized I had managed to capture an insect in flight as part of the digital image. Everyone gets curious when you shoot vr's!

The creation of the vr's you see on this page for Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation were produced with the kind and generous support of the South Carolina Humanities Council through a grant. They are part of a larger piece of work being produced on the use of vr's in the humanities. We'd also like to thank the Georgia Department of Natural Resources for allowing us to shoot the photos.

Savannah, Georgia
Savannah's historic district is home to many "squares" - each with its own name and characteristics. This is a vr of a typical square with a park area in the center and houses on all four sides. You can still see what it might have been like with some of the larger homes that are visible today. Perhaps a little less grand than they once were, but still very interesting.
Fort Pulaski near Savannah, Georgia
Thanks to the assistance and support of the Humanities Council of South Carolina, we are able to share with you these vr's of Fort Pulaski. For photos of the fort, click here.
